Deepika Kumari stuns world No 8, reaches pre-quarters

The Indian women’s hockey team was thrashed 6-1 by their Australian counterparts at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday, leaving the Indians still in search of their first win of the tournament.Archer Bombayla Devi Laishram advanced to the women’s individual pre-quarterfinals after wins over Austria’s Laurence Baldauff and Taipei’s Lin Shih-Chia, at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

Shooter Jitu Rai and Judoka Avtar Singh failed to advance, however. Rai finished 12th in the men’s 50m air pistol qualification, after a poor last few shots. He required a top-eight finish to make the final. Avtar lost in the men’s 90 kg round of 32 to Misenga Popole of the Refugee Olympic Team.
