New Delhi Former Lok Sabha Speaker and one of the tallest leaders from North-East India, P.A.Sangma, died here on Friday. He was 68.
Sangma, who founded Nationalist Congress Party along with Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar in protest against Congress president’s foreign origin, was the chief minister of Meghalaya and former Union Minister. He held many portfolios in Rajiv Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Narasimha Rao Cabinets.
As Lok Sabha Speaker, he earned the goodwill of all MPs cutting across party lines.
He unsuccessfully fought last Presidential election against Pranab Kumar Mukherjee.
He represented Tuna Lok Sabha constituency from Meghalaya eight times.
Though he was one of the NCP founders, he left the party ahead of the Presidential election since NCP did not support his candidature.
Both houses of Parliament adjourned till March 8 as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
